The Main Library of Sookmyung Women’s University originally started as a study hall belonging to Sookmyung Women’s Professional College in 1938, and later in 1948 its name was changed to the Affiliated Library of Sookmyung Women’s College, and finally the Main Library was inaugurated in 1955 when Sookmyung Women’s University approved.

It was a three-story building with 1961, and was extended to a four-story with 400 seats, 65,000 volumes, and 800 titles of periodical in 1964. In 1984 a new seven-story library, one underground and six above, was completed and it’s been an open stack library with thematic classification since. The Main Library has 2,200 seats and the combined collections of over 900,000 material including 20,000 titles of periodicals as the present of 2002, and its main service are reading, circulation, and reference service. Its computerization started in 1988, and both the Total System (managing acquisition, classification, circulation, return, access, search, and materials) and the Digital Library System completed in 2000, make a quick and accurate search possible. Music Library established in 2002. Completed renovation of the library launched in 2005.
